Eighteen guests of the state got owies Tuesday when several fights broke out at Salinas Valley State Prison.  Only one officer was hurt and he was not injured by an inmate.

Eleven of the convicted felons required outside hospital treatment, as did the officer.  One of the criminals was airlifted out.  The inmates were sliced, slashed and thumped.  The officer injured his back as he helped break up the frivolities.

The fight(s) broke out on a recreation yard.  There were 200 inmates on the yard.  It is believed 179 were involved in the violence.
