Sex change operation under way at Chowchilla

Yesterday was sex change day at Valley State Prison.  It used to be Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla, but it isn’t any more, courtesy of a Contra Costa County Superior Court Judge.

The male prisoners arriving are supposed to be light-weight level II prisoners, at least initially.  The women’s side of the prison now has less than 1700 inmates.

There is going to be another hearing on December 7.  That hearing could reestablish the injunction against the move of male prisoners into the facility.  The state has refused to prepare the expensive and time-consuming Environmental Impact Report on the switch-over.

The state wants to have all the women out early next year.  It will hold as many as 2,300 male inmates when filled.  Some of the women are planned to be moved to a 400 bed facility in Folsom.
