Serious disturbance at Susanville leaves ten staff injured (updated)

Aug 22nd, 2012 | By | Category: Bob's Blotter

I have received one report, from a usually solid and informed source, that there was a serious disturbance at HDSP on Monday that left ten staff injured.

If anybody has further solid information on this I would not mind hearing it.

Update:  Ten staff were indeed injured, 8 in the incident and two following.  It appears that the Southerns set the thing up.  They blocked responding staff and, when staff did get onto the yard they were attacked three separate times by Southern inmates.  A total of 16 rounds of 40mm were fired as well as two rifle rounds.

All of the staff injuries were minor.  Nine of the officers were transported to off-ground medical facilities for treatment, as well as one inmate.

Thank you for the link, Rachael

I retired off C yard in ’07. Worked my last shift there in March of that year. Anyone with an update on how the injured officers are doing, who they are, and any other info please don’t hesitate to contact me at:

    Thank you.

No problem. I am a CO’s wife and try to stay informed, since info is so hard to get from where it SHOULD come from! (ie: CDCR, CCPOA). Plus, we spent time in Susanville, albiet at CCC.

Just so you’ll know, they say they are going to lay off 2100 officers, but they are going to run a academy in mid 2013, they are hiring seargents to do backgrounds, and OPOS is sending out notices to get ready……

  3. Oomph says: has some info……be careful out there it will happen soon.

Of course they will do something. I’s called more staff cuts. Just receive info the administration inside the institutions received a conference call that said 2,100-2,800 correctional officers will be laid off on this next waive.
S much for standardized staffing. They stated they did not make enough cuts in wave 2.

Holy crap! The article sounds like some inmates did their homework on staff response and set up an ambush. I am glad no one on staff was seriously injured, but that incident could have been very ugly.

I hope the CDCr does more than investigate this attack on staff by providing at least as much detail to other institutions (regarding the tactics used on staff by the inmates) as this news story contains.

I worked HDSP from 1996 until 2009, and the one thing I can tell you is that inmates have been studying our response for years. I remember one particular riot there in 2004 or 2005, where one group of inmates actually formed a “wedge” and rescued one of theirs from the other race. I was standing about 20 feet from where this happened. Everyone at HDSP…stay safe, and stand strong.
