A bill that would allow “undocumented residents” (illegal aliens) to get an actual sort-of drivers license, which would allow them to more easily by insurance and not get their cars impounded inconveniently, has made its way to the governor's desk.
The bill is AB60 by Assemblyman Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville). These licenses would be visually different from regular drivers licenses and non-driver ID cards currently issued by the state. This worries or irritates some people, but will probably keep the feds happy. The bill also expressly prohibits employment and housing discrimination based on the document, which is sort of odd. Isn't it illegal to knowingly employ an illegal alien?
Is this a good idea? Maybe. Will it work? Maybe. As someone who has tangled in a traffic accident with an unlicensed, uninsured illegal alien a time or two I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. It is,however, not my call. It is generally believed that Jerry will sign the bill, so we will see what happens.
